DC - Just in case packaging range

http://lookslikegooddesign.com/just-in-case/

Although not entirely food packaging design, I tihnk it would be good content for my publication as it shows how food and drink can work with as a set with other items, alongside a concept pulling them altogether.

DC - Brief 1 - John Lewis Toys

Source: http://irvingandco.com/2012/10/john-lewis-toys/

I came across this wonderful toy packaging design for John Lewis, the result a corporate yet high end quality result. I love the use of bright primary colours against the simplicity of the white packaging and range of shapes.

I love how its created consistency through colour alone, and its something I strive for. I have yet to design my packaging range for the childrens items, but this will certainly start my thinking and design process.

DC -

http://www.pearlfisher.com

An example of packaging designed around its sole purpose, in this case form following function - a pharmaceutical line, each product providing the information needed. Thats it. Colour dependant on product to tell them apart.

DC - Dessert Sleeve

http://zoo.ad/index.php/projects#/cinc_sentits

Packaging design for the “Cinc Sentits” restaurant from Barcelona.

A beautiful simple piece of wrap around packaging sealed with string, which also holds the product packaging still inside the container, as well as holding the net together. An effective way to temporarily package a dessert product, to be taken home from the restaurant its sold at.

DC - Luxury content driven packaging

http://zoo.ad/index.php/projects#/Packaging-Ruben-Alvarez

Packaging design for the new product by chocolate artist Rubén Álvarez.

Packaging solely driven by the content, in this case yoghurt, using the hardening of the chocolate yoghurt of create a seal around the lid, which is removed through the use of attached string. Otherwise its very simple packaging, a brown tube. It's a great interactive piece of packaging, which in itself would be a reason to purchase it.

This packaging design although beautiful isn't too practical, as the removal of the seal is messy and means it can not be re-seal or reused. This kind of products packaging wouldn't be commercially viable but brilliant for small independent food / dessert outlets.

DC - What is packaging

http://www.ashleyhohnstein.com/

Looking at the subject of what is packaging, I came across this very simple container for a range of books. Working much like a business card case, in that the lid covers 80% of the casing. I much like this design due to its concept and consistancy with the product it is holding, the books had been catagorised into land, water, and desert. A pattern design and colour palette were created to reflect this. This is used across all design elements, including the casing.

The question of what is packaging, this could be seen as simple something the books needed to be put in, to be seen within retailers and by consumers as a working set of books. But overall its acting as a form of packaging - holding the books together in a format best suited for its purpose.

DC - Useful packaging

I came across 'In good health' Muesli packaging when trying to categorise packaging, realising this packaging design was more than for aesthetic purpose, which is initially seemed with the heavy amount of illustrative content. The tube its self is reusable, which I really like, but also the lid acts as a way of measuring - one lid full acts as one serving, which I think is a brilliant idea - the designer has thought about the overall consumer purchase and usability rather than just what it looks like, which I admire.

DC - Planning Research

Before I started designing I really needed to get a better understanding of what it was I wanted my publication to be about. I already have my topic, which is packaging, but what I wanted to gain from my research was something I needed to focus on. After compiling my questions for creatives to answer, I got a better understanding which revolves around the idea of how important the design of packaging is.

My publication content plan:

1. What is packaging / what counts as a form of packaging

2. What types of packaging are there
- Form follows function (eg pharmaceutical )
- Aethetic Purpose, for display ( eg for the sale of a product )
- For design / For more than just packaging (transforms into something else for another use )
- A form of advertisement

3. The affect print and stock choices have on the design of a packaging design
- Quality
- Effect
- Price
- Interest

4. How important is a products packaging design
- To what effect does it have on its purpose / consumer / product

5. What does a packaging designer need to consider?
- Design choices
- Limitations
- Target audience
- Stock / Printing processes
- Consumer
- Location

DC - Compiling Primary Research - Email Content

The content I intend to use:

My name is Stephanie Lawson, I am 3rd year BA (hons) Graphic Design student at Leeds College of Art.

I have a huge interest within the Packaging industry, more specifically the packaging of food and drink items. I am producing and collecting content for a publication based on Who or What inspires me.

If you have a spare minute I would really appreciate some feedback.

What is your current favourite food or drink packaging design and why?

Whats the most interesting and unique food or drink packaging you've ever come across? Please source if possible

How important do you think the design of a food or drinks packaging is?

Have stock and printing processes driven any of your packaging briefs, if so which and why?

I decided that a standard email may not get the attention of many contacts, so put the questions into a packaging context:

For studios who design for packaging:

For studios who don't design for packaging:

DC - Brief 4 - Allinson flour

Source: http://www.packagingoftheworld.com/2013/01/allinson-flour-redesign.html

'Brand packaging agency Family (and friends) has developed a new look for Allinson Flour to help boost the brand’s sales.
The brand has a great reputation in bread flour and yeast, but awareness that there is a culinary range has been very low.
One of the main problems has been that the range isn’t aligned with the typical culinary consumer; baking is a fun pastime and it requires ingredients that customers should enjoy shopping for, even their flour! '

Allinson is a well renowned brand of baking supplies, very much like Be-ro, but has recently redesigned it's packaging collection for its flour range. Using geometric patterns and shapes, with a bold 60s inspired colour palette they have engaged with a new, younger audience. It's packaging design became its focus to improve its sales and reputation, which it directly what I am trying to achieve with the Be-ro range.

Catagorising: Design for aesthetic purpose, to be outstanding among a shelf display stand, to entice customers to purchase the item base don what it looks like. Using bright bold colours in the form geometric patterns to do so.
