DC - Brief 3 - Laus

Source: http://heystudio.es/bases-laus-2010/

I came across this project after looking for inspiration regarding production and binding for my publication. I had discussed possible ways to categorise the sections of my book within a crit but didn't really come back with any inspiration. I could take a similar approach to Heystudio in using stock to visually divide chapters. I feel it will add to the overall appearance and professionalism of the finalised piece.

DC - Brief 1 - Anna Walker - Illustrator

I came across Anna Walker whilst looking at children's books and found a real interest within the illustration style of the book 'I love my dad'. The simple watercolour character illustrations against a white backgrounds - the images were simple enough for a child the age of 3 - 5 to understand, and playful enough to be child friendly.

I don't believe in dragons

A slightly more adventurous method of illustration, there is a lot of colour and background content behind characters. I'm a bit concerned this may be too much for a young child to understand in this style of illustration - with watercolour there is no harsh outline to separate objects.

Storying boarding is something I must consider

My favourite of Anna's books, I really like the colour palette and illustration style, I would like to emulate this within my own designs.

Brief 3 - Typographic Dialect

I was struggling a bit trying to think about what I wanted to do for the special edition of my regional phrase book, Firstly I want to create one large book rather than 5 singular, so this adds problems to how I choose to lay it out appropriately - Alongside this I want to add more elements which will help the understanding of accent and dialect. So in relation to this I came across a few different way language has been represented thought design, below a pocket sized book. A similar format to my original design, but the differentiation from page to page regarding typography is an interesting element. This year i really want to improve my type and layout skills so I hope this is a step in the right direction. To be able to produce something as well as the below project.

I found this interesting due to the link between illustration, info graphic and typography - its a combination. Using a vector shape of Britain, and dividing it into its regions, and using regional dialect of the county to make up the shape of the region, it a really clever way of communicating and displaying language to a particular area. This could be an ad-on to my original book idea - a visual way of explaining alongside the solely typography side of things.

Brief 1 - Interactive Book

I began to think I could push the idea of a simple publication for the 10 things brief. Children have a short attention span, so I need to consider this in my design development stages. I need to start researching more about my target audience and develop a concept from there, rather than starting on a product. So I started looking at an array of different approach I could take which would link to interactivity. The below, a re-take of the book design for James and the Giant Peach. The designer has included an in leaf pocket, which holds further education devices taking the form of scientific drawings of the insects within the story. It takes another platform, including the content of its subject matter, into the design stages. I really like the idea of doing something like this generally - for briefs to become research dependant, to reveal something else I could do and push.

The next source I found interesting due to its design elements rather than its conceptual and content. Combining illustration and info graphics, to become a publication advertisement is a really appropriate way I could connect with my secondary target audience of parents. Using a product such as a magazine or Newspaper is far more appropriate and likely to be seem, than simply the books standing as themselves. Thinking beyond the initial target audience, as to who I really need to aim the product at is an important element I should think about for every brief, ideally. I need to know who exactly to target.
